Ai Weiwei is a Chinese conceptual artist and activist working across many media and in collaboration on projects for social justice and progress. His work frequently embodies humour and humility but aims to effect social change, sometimes at the risk of life and freedom. Ai Weiwei is a multidisciplinary artist and political activist born in Beijing in 1957.He is the son of the highly regarded modern Chinese Poet Ai Qing, and half-brother of fellow artist Ai Xuan. Ai is interested in issues across the realms of the social, political, and cultural. He has conducted several high profile projects  (both locally and internationally) critiquing the Chinese government’s stance and handling of human rights, democracy

Ai is interested in issues across the realms of the social, political, and cultural. He has conducted several high profile projects (both locally and internationally) critiquing the Chinese government’s stance and handling of human rights, democracy and other political affairs, working in various media such as music, video, installation and architecture. Ai’s identities as an artist and political activist are fluid, with his experiences feeding and fuelling each other, often resulting in politically outspoken artworks. Ai Wei Wei refuses to be a silent witness.
