About

Quinn worked as an assistant in Barry Flanagan’s studio, where he learned to cast bronze. He studied at Cambridge University until 1986 and had his first solo show in 1988 at the Jay Jopling/Otis Gallery in London. He was selected for the Sydney Biennale in 1992, represented in Young British Artists II at the Saatchi Gallery in 1993 and participated in Sensation at the Royal Academy, London in 1997. He had a solo show at the South London Gallery in 1998. For a long time Quinn used almost exclusively his own body as a source. In 1995 he commented on subjectivity by saying that, ‘the self is what one knows best and least at the same time … casting the body gives one an opportunity to “see” the self’. Since then Quinn’s work has developed further to include the gallery space, without however losing sight of his concern with the aesthetics of the body.
