Carlos Blanco: La Cruda Realidad – Raw Reality Residency and Exhibition

20 Jun-20 Jul 2001

Columbian artist Carlos Blanco presents two-metre tall plastic inflatable masks representing characters from Colombia. Attached to air pumps, the heads inflate and deflate, both in relation to each other and according to the size of each character's ego.

The Columbian artist Carlos Blanco was invited to London from April to July 2001, to take part in the artists in residence programme at the Gasworks Artists’ Studios as part of the Gasworks / inIVA International Residency programme. He developed several two-metre tall plastic inflatable masks representing characters from Colombia. Attached to air pumps, the heads inflate and deflate, both in relation to each other and according to the size of each character’s ego.

Carlos Blanco’s installation of a group of large inflated figures, an assembly of breathing portraits of individuals, who have an impact on Colombia’s political and social establishment was shown at TheSpace@inIVA from 20 June – 20 July 2001. This work was developed as part of Gasworks / inIVA International Residency programme at the Gasworks Artists Studios, London.
