Documenting Live – publication and DVD resource

|

Documenting Live is a unique new publication and DVD resource focusing on live art practices and questions of cultural identity. Published by the Live Art Development agency, this exciting new resource was launched at an event at Rivington Place and is now available for reference at the Stuart Hall Library.

Representing the work of 13 artists from the 1990s and 2000s, it also includes an essay by renowned curator David A. Bailey, and a DVD containing artists' commentaries, excerpts from key works, and round table discussions with David A. Bailey and the featured artists.

There are many challenges in the documentation, archiving and contextualistion of live art, and these challenges can lead to the exclusion of significant artists and approaches from wider cultural discourses and art histories. This is particularly the case for artists concerned with questions of identity, difference and the complexities of 'cultural diversity'.

Documenting Live sets out to address these challenges through the creation of an archival and critical document. It has been developed as a resource for artists, scholars, students, curators, historians, policy makers, and anyone interested in the cultural landscape of the UK.

Featured artists: Barby Asante, David A. Bailey, Ansuman Biswas, Malika Booker, Sonia Boyce, George Chakravarthi, Robin Deacon, Yara El-Sherbini, Harminder Singh Judge, Keith Khan, David Medalla, Harold Offeh, Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa, Ali Zaidi
