The investigation, in landscapes and artefacts, of the traces of continuous use is Whitford's central theme. She calls them 'archaeological shadows'. She represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 1990, and since 2000 carried out land-drawing and installation projects at Harewood House, Leeds, Coventry and Gottingen, Germany. She is represented in the collection of the Tate Gallery, the Scottish Museum of Modern Art, the Arts Councils of Scotland and England, and the Contemporary Art Society. Kate Whiteford lives and works in London.
