Joaquin Torres-García moved to Europe as a teenager and only returned to Uruguay in 1934. He studied art in Spain, and from 1926 was involved in avant-garde circles in France. Torres-García developed his own theory of art, Universalismo constructivo, which became an important basis for the development of abstract Latin American art.
