Sukumaran studied at the Nene College of Art and Design in Northampton and at the Byam Shaw School of Art, London. His work developed initially from a need to express dark thoughts in a "safe" environment, using visual imagery to explore alienation, racism and spirituality. He is a senior designer at the BBC.
