Lázaro Saavedra was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1964 where he lives and works. He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, in 1988. Saavedra's practice combines pictorial work with performances, happenings and video installations amongst other modes of expression.

He exhibits widely and recent exhibitions include the solo En una noche de terror cualquiera comete un crimen, CCCICAIC (2006) and the group exhibitions The Hours, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2006) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2007); Killing Time, Exit Art, New York (2007); Turbulence, 3^rd Triennial, Auckland Art Gallery (2007); Cuban Avant-Garde, Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Gainesville, Florida (2007); Regarding Fear and Hope, University of Art, Melbourne (2007). Saavedra has held residencies in the US, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Cuba and the UK (he was artist in residence at the Barbican Centre, London in 1999).

Lecturer at the ISA since 1991, Saavedra was a member of the group Puré in the 1980s, the project Pilón (1988-89), as well as the collective Enema, a group of students from the ISA in the 1990s. He is the creator of Galería I-MEIL, a current electronic art activism project.

Lázaro Saavedra nació en La Habana, donde vive y trabaja, in 1964. Se graduó en el Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), La Habana, en 1988. La práctica artística de Saavedra combina obra pictórica con performances, happenings e instalaciones de vídeo, entre otras formas de expresión.

Exhibe su obra continuamente; sus exposiciones recientes incluyen la individual En una noche de terror cualquiera comete un crimen, CCCICAIC (2006), y las exposiciones colectivas The Hours, Museo Irlandés de Arte Moderno, Dublín (2006) y Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Sydney (2007); Killing Time, Exit Art, Nueva York (2007); Turbulence, Tercera Trienal, Galería de Arte Auckland (2007); Cuban Avant-Garde, Museo de Arte Samuel P. Harn, Gainesville, Florida (2007), y Regarding Fear and Hope, Universidad de Arte, Melbourne (2007). Saavedra ha hecho residencias artísticas en los Estados Unidos, Canadá, Alemania, Suiza, Japón, Cuba y el Reino Unido (fue artista en residencia del Barbican Centre, Londres, en 1999).

Desde 1991 es profesor en el ISA. Saavedra fue miembro del grupo Puré en la década de 1980, del proyecto Pilón (1988-89), así como del colectivo Enema, formado por un grupo de estudiantes del ISA, en los noventas. Es el creador de la Galería I-MEIL, un proyecto actual de activismo a través del arte electrónico.
