Chris Ofili studied at Tameside College of Technology, at Chelsea School of Art and at the Royal College of Art, London. He graduated in 1993 with a MA in Fine Art.
He paints images that make reference to religious iconography and at the same time repeat the familiar details of black identity culture. He thus sets up semantic fields of tension, - the harder to endure by the spectator for their sheer and startling beauty. Recently, Ofili worked in series and, by creating quasi-sacral scenario, has made the presentation of the work in the gallery space integral to them. He lives and works in London.
