Nordgren studied at the Forum School for Graphic Art, Malmo and Economic History and Art History at Lund University (1969-74). Until 1990 he was editor of Kalejdoskop, a review for contemporary art and publisher.
From 1980 he was art critic at the Stockholm daily, Dagens Nyheter, and editor/producer of weekly television and radio arts programs. He became director and curator of the Malmo Konsthall in 1990. Nordgren is a founding director of IASPIS - International Artists Studio Programme in Stockholm, and of BALTIC, The Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England.
