Jamoula McKean worked as a photographic and film/video artist since the 1970's, with group exhibitions at several venues. Her career has also focused on education over 30 years including institutions such as Birkbeck College, the V&A, and Hackney Community College. She was also head of department of the Photography department at Pimlico Arts & Media.
Recently McKean has concentrated more on academic research, which she feels still lacks a voice in terms of the cultural placement of Arab filmmaking. She has also completed a PhD in Lebanese film, using the philosophic ideas of Georgio Agamben and Paul Ricoeur to inform and develop into an argument for research.
