After studying at the University of South Africa Maharaj was given residency in the United Kingdom in 1976 under the Geneva Convention for Refugees. He wrote a Ph.D. on 'The Dialectic of Modernism and Mass Culture: Studies in Postwar British Art'. He is Professor of Art History and Theory at Goldsmiths College, London, Research Fellow at the Jan Van Eyck Akademie, Maastrich and the first Rudolf Arnheim Professor of Art History at Humboldt University, Berlin. Sarat Maharaj is also an expert on the art of Richard Hamilton, Marcel Duchamp and James Joyce.
