Sidney Kasfir entered the Ph.D. program in fine arts at Harvard, but interruped her studies for several years to run the Nommo Gallery in Uganda, then the country's only venue for contemporary art.
She earned her Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1981, and now focuses her work on local encounters between "traditional" African art production and modernity. Kasfir returned to Uganda in 2003 to study the effects of globalization on two socially very different groups of artists, both producing artifacts for the global tourist market.
