Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller

Meta Fuller studied at Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Arts from 1894 to 1899 and at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1903 to 1907.

She travelled to Paris, where she studied at the Academie Colarossi and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and met Henry Ossawa Tanner and Auguste Rodin. Her sculpture The Wretched was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1903 and again in 1904.

Although no historical or biographical links exist between Meta Fuller and the Harlem Renaissance she is often mentioned in this context. Ethiopian Awakening has especially acquired iconic status as a symbol for the common past of black people. Fuller died in 1968.
