Monika Dutta: Disposed Ofs [sic]

|

As part of the Artist-in-Research programme Monika Dutta spent a period of six weeks at the Assisted Conception Unit, King's College Hospital in London.

The Assisted Conception Unit has enabled hundreds of women to conceive through its IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) programme during its thirteen-year history. Via access to the nursing staff as well as the Unit's labs, Monika Dutta found herself drawn to items of equipment that had been discarded and disposed of by nurses. These test tubes, petri dishes, pipettes and plastic tubes were 'rescued' and archived by photographing and videoing them.

This collection of 'ephemera' has provided the inspiration, as well as the raw materials, for creating future works. In many ways they bring an unexpected dimension to the somewhat predictable images captured from the ultrasound scan monitors and microscope video links central to the IVF treatment.

Her project attempted to imitate the intimate and discrete nature of the treatment patients undergo.
