From the Personal Geographies: Shared Journeys series by Charlotte Lee
In this project students explored personal geographies and journeys of identity, displacement and migration relevant to their creative and social development as young people. They investigated creative approaches to mapping through the use of visual arts as a means to develop their inner potential, voice and vision about their culture, locality and identity.
Students were intially taken on a tour of Newham to talk about places in their borough they had never been to. During the tour they filmed and photographed places, and this footage was later incorporated into their video and photo works which they produced using IMovie and Photoshop during a one week intensive workshop. The results showcase the process of their creative actions and self-discovery about where they live and where they come from. The students also learned new techniques and developed ideas around creative mapping and art practice.
Students worked with artist Monica de Miranda and geographer Paul Goodwin.
