Dialogues Across the Black Atlantic took place at the Institute of International Visual Arts, London on 18 and 19 June 1997. Organised to coincide with the exhibition Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance, two conversations between the curators David A. Bailey and Richard J. Powell and between the artists Jacob Lawrence and Frank Bowling, respectively, explored the intellectual and artistic relationships forged across the black Atlantic diaspora. The transcripts of these dialogues give an insight into the critical and curatorial framework for the exhibition and publication.
