Pat Naldiās work centres on notions of physical and cultural colonisation on a personal and political level. For the X-Space commission she has continued her research into notions of colonialism and imperialism by focusing on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British gardens.
Since the last Ice Age the date of the introduction of a foreign plant into Britain has precisely mirrored the exploration of a new country by the British Empire. This introduction, in particular to gardens of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, became a horticultural expression of patriotism and imperial display, providing its audience with the power to imaginatively travel without ever having to leave the home.
