Communicating dissent

With a lack of access to extensive or hi-tech modes of communication, there are a handful of artists in Cuba who find ways to overcome this barrier. Artists Lázaro Saavedra and Jeanette Chávez discuss their methods for communicating dissent.

When collaboration facilitates art

Collaboration often arises out of necessity in Cuba. What emerges is art produced in the true spirit of collaboration where resources are shared and cultivated. Brothers Iván and Yoan Capote discuss their collaborative working methods. By way of introduction, the co-curators, Havana-based Gerardo Mosquera and Cylena Simonds who is based in London, allow us to listen in on a short telephone conversation about their curatorial collaboration.

Film screenings

States of Exchange video screening programme features artists' shorts and experimental documentaries. From the moment video arrived in Cuba it became an alternative mode of communication exchange - it provided artists with a new means of creative freedom and rewrote the terms of the art-institutions relationship in Cuba.

Screened over two Thursday evenings in February and two in March 2008, Iniva will present a selection of works including Cuba Baila (Cuba Dances) by Alexis de la O Joya, Informes de Hechos Vividos (Reports on Lived Events) by Jesús Hernández and Buscándote Havana (Looking for You, Havana) by Alina Rodríguez.
