What began in concept as a series of interviews between Andrei Tarkovsky and his mother, emerged later as The Mirror – a visually poetic film reflecting on love, memory, loyalty and history.
The Mirror marks a shift in theoretical approach for Tarkovsky; from the use of his self-termed theory of 'sculpting in time' to his use and interest in the more classic framework that focuses around a single action with few or no subplots. Memories of the narrator and his mother, newsreel footage of Russia's triumphs and disasters seep and permeate across and outside of their historical time-frames. This fluid approach moulds a diverse portrait of the narrator, his mother, his former wife and pre-WW2 Russia.
The Mirror abounds with emotionally resonant scenes, sumptuous imagery and stunning cinematography that together craft a beautiful and unsettling film which is perhaps one of the finest examples of Tarkovsky's work.
This is the first screening in a series of films selected by Oscar Muñoz that have been influential to his practice.
