Introduction
to the Celluloid Cities: Raw and Uncut season by Gilane Tawadros

Egyptian
Cinema Posters is a massive billboard project that will be on sites
in inner London throughout June. This site-specific project brings the
iconography of one of the world's oldest and most dynamic cities in collision
with one of Europe's largest and most culturally-diverse metropolises.

From the Architectural
Association's conference London: Post-Colonial City are papers
by Paul Gilroy, Clare
Melhuish
and Claudia Roden. From distinctive perspectives, these texts examine
how London's socio-political demography has been constructed by dense
urban spaces and the diverse cultures residing within them.

Interstices
is a collaborative project between artist Ursula Biemann and Latino
women living in Zurich which uses personal testimonies conveyed through
image and text. Exploring the transition from psychologist to cleaner
and from model to prostitute, these women unravel the complex issues surrounding
migrancy, separation, isolation and upheaval. The first instalment of
this project is a personal account from the artist's perspective.

During July
1999, one of America's rising stars, New York based poet Sarah Jones performs
extracts from Surface Transit. From
an elderly New York 'bag lady' to the racist Southern red-neck, Jones
presents an array of characters whose voices are rarely heard within the
polyphonous city.

Film is one
of the most powerful ways of evoking the complexities of contemporary
urban life. This international programme explores postcolonial cities
and the complex dynamics of different urban experiences. From intimate,
personal stories and the harsh realities of ethnic conflict to transient
tales and symbolic journeys, these films articulate experiences of migration,
isolation and belonging.

Post-Colonial City, which took place in London on 12 to 13 March 1999.
