Iniva was established in 1994 to address an imbalance in the representation of culturally diverse artists, curators and writers. Iniva is a registered charity, funded by Arts Council England and governed by a Board of Trustees. The Chair of the Board is Paula Kahn. We are a team of 15 staff, based at Rivington Place in Shoreditch, East London.
Our mission
Iniva creates exhibitions, publications, digital projects, education and research projects, designed to bring the work of artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to the attention of the widest possible public. Anchored in the diversity of contemporary British culture and society, Iniva engages with culturally diverse practices and ideas, both local and global.
Iniva invites artists and audiences to question assumptions about contemporary art and ideas, acting as a catalyst for making these debates and artworks part of mainstream culture.
Aims
Working collaboratively with a wide range of individuals and organisations, we aim to:
- Promote the work of artists, academics and curators from a plurality of cultures and cultural backgrounds
- Increase knowledge and understanding of contemporary visual arts in the United Kingdom and abroad, with special emphasis on introducing new audiences to innovative art practice and scholarship of the highest order
- Extend the intellectual, social and geographical boundaries of debate on contemporary visual art
- Create opportunities for dialogue, collaboration and exchange of ideas and information about contemporary visual art practice between different cultures and continents
History
Information about past projects and the people we have worked with over the years can be found in each section of the website as well as in the digital archive. In 2004 we published Changing States which charts a decade of artistic programming at Iniva, in the context of global economics and local politics. The book includes a timeline of Iniva’s work.
