Project Archivist

Iniva seeks to appoint a Project Archivist to catalogue its archive collections in Stuart Hall Library.

Contract: 4 months fixed term
Salary: £30,000 pro rata (3 days a week, 0.6 FTE)
Reporting to: Library and Archive Manager

The Project

Iniva preserves and promotes the work of British artists of African, Asian and Latin American descent. Iniva’s Archive is a rich resource comprised of audio-visual material, unique artistic ephemera, publication files and historical documents related to the creation of the organisation. It charts the emergence of artistic practice and theoretical developments responding to cultural shifts and identity politics over the last 25 years. In recognition of its special history, Iniva has received funding from the Business Archive Council for an archivist to catalogue the collections enabling us to celebrate our past, and influence the future making this vital resource accessible to the public.

Iniva’s Archive is closely allied to Stuart Hall Library, where it is housed. As the intellectual and social hub of Iniva, the Library provides a context for the archive and the opportunity to study the wider historical themes it embodies on international contemporary visual arts through the lens of race, class and gender.

The Role

Working closely with Iniva’s Director, Library and Archive Manager and volunteers, the Project Archivist will be responsible for supporting the project to create access to Iniva’s Archive by cataloguing this collection and developing initiatives to increase its reach to a wide and diverse audience. This will build on previous listing work of archival documentation and lay the foundations for future digitisation of core items in the collection.

The ideal candidate with bring excellent knowledge and experience of best practice in archival storage and cataloguing to the team, to methodically identify, record and preserve a resource of approximately 1000 files. A passion for increasing opportunities for access through digitisation is essential. The role requires first-rate project management, database and computer literacy expertise.
